The Importance of Conversation Practice of a Foreign Language

A foreign language is critical to have in your arsenal in today’s globalizing world. You may learn to read and write well in the classroom, but conversation practice is critical to becoming fluent.

Whether you are learning another language for academic, travel, professional, or some other types of reasons, understanding spoken, everyday language is essential. To make yourself understood to others in a general conversation is also important.

Many foreign language classrooms today do not encourage much speaking and listening practice. Instead, students end up able to write grammatically correct sentences and to read the news online or in a newspaper, but they can’t have a conversation about their families or express their opinions clearly with native and proficient speakers.

Some classrooms that are equipped with Internet access can sometimes chat with native speaking teachers through scheduled online classes. That is a big boost to the students’ learning, but it’s not enough for them to succeed.

If you’re learning another language, look high and low for a native speaker of that language who is willing to just talk with you in that language. It doesn’t matter if that person is a certified language teacher or tutor, just that that person corrects your grammar and helps you build your vocabulary. A conversation partner or tutor can also help improve your listening and speaking skills just through basic conversation.

You can find native-speaking and fluent tutors online that you can pay to help you learn your foreign language. You can also post an ad on your local classifieds website to find someone local. Perhaps you can trade lessons in your language for those of the native or proficent speaker of the language you are learning. You can do the same thing online. There are lots of sites that allow you to practice learning a language with someone if you offer conversation lessons in your native language in exchange.

If you’re planning to study at a university, or perhaps research at a university in another country, you still will need to know how to understand your professors and how to make a phone call in the language of that country. Traveling requires you to constantly make reservations, requests, listen to tour guides, and otherwise speak and listen. Getting a job where you have to speak another language definitely means that your conversation skills should be excellent.

Don’t neglect building your conversation skills as you learn a new language. Learning from a textbook or YouTube to practice your reading, writing, and listening skills can only go so far. You need to interact in real-time with someone who speaks that language fluently.

If you cannot find someone who speaks the language fluently, then make it a habit to practice the language you’re learning with a friend who is also learning. Talk together in that language for just 30 minutes a day. If that fails, talk to yourself. Think in your head in the other language. Get as much practice in whatever way is possible to become a proficient user of that language.
