Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy is also known as SASTRA in shorter form and it is a deemed to be university. The university was established in 1984 and its chancellor is Mr. Rama Chandran. Its vice chancellor is Mr. R. Sethuraman. Situated near the Thanjavur city in Tamil Nadu, this university campus is rural and it is spacious. The main university campus is spread across an area of 168 acres.

Apart from its affiliation with the university grants commission or UGC, it has collaborations with multiple national and international academic organization. According to the QS World Ranking, this university has ranked 351^st among all of the universities of the world and according to NIRF, it is among the top 36 universities in India.
