Driller

Description

A driller operates large machines for the process of drilling the earth. Drillers dig into the earth going through rock and soil, either to get samples for scientists to research on or to find natural resources such as water, gas and different types of minerals for example limestone, coal, marble and diamond.

Common Duties/Routines

A driller operates specific machinery that is used to bore holes into the ground. A driller gets instructions on how the hole should be drilled such as the pressure, size of hole and pump output and they have to make sure that they follow the exact instructions and all the measurements are followed to as near as possible. They are also given other information such as the type of ground, type of mud and what to expect once they start drilling and also interpret sketched drawings of the site and hole they have to dig and they need to keep all these things in mind while drilling. Before starting drilling, they have to ensure that all the equipment such as drill pipes and other tubes are fully functional and in working order to avoid any problems or accidents after starting drilling. They also have to see to it that the equipment is set up correctly before starting the shift. They also need to coordinate and assist during rig up and rig down operations. Sometimes they are also involved in explosive placement in mining or construction related works. One of the most important duty of a driller is to monitor that all the other workers are doing their job correctly according to the given instructions. After the operation, they need to write a report about all the happenings and work done, what equipment and machinery is used and file it. Also, if there are any mineral deposits found in or near the land they are drilling, it is important they report that. If there was any problem with the equipment or at the site of drilling, they also have to inform about that.

A very important job of a driller is to be very safety conscious and use protective equipment such as masks, coats or safety goggles while drilling and ensure that all the other workers are wearing it too. He should comply to all safety rules and regulations and also take part in meetings on safety and participate in emergency drills. Because if something goes wrong because of their error, their career will be on the line.

If there are any accidents, near-accidents, safety issues, problems among the workers or any other issue in the workplace, it is important to intervene immediately and try to solve it as well report that incident to the superiors so that the problem can be resolved or ways can be thought of to avoid such accidents in the future.

Required/Trained Skills

A driller should be well aware of all the machinery and equipment used in drilling. Also, they should know important parameters to bring into consideration and take care of while drilling. They should also have great physical stamina as they have to be on their feet all the time and do work using heavy machinery.

Other than these, good communication skills to interact with the supervisor and the workers, leadership skills to assign tasks to workers and monitor they do it correctly and analytical skills to analyze instructions and drawings are also important. Also, knowledge of computer programs such as word, excel, power point etc. is also important.

Education requirements

A high school diploma is sufficient if one wants to pursue this profession. Helpful high school courses include geology, drawing and technology among others.  Having a driving license is a requirement in most companies looking to hire drillers as driving a drilling rig is part of the job. Enrolling in a course which teaches and trains about safety will increase the chance of getting employed. In some countries, hired drillers first go through an apprentice program and drill under supervision and are trained by more experienced drillers.

Associate degrees are also available and favors getting hired.

Some drillers study further and get degrees in petroleum, mining or other related subjects and may get even better jobs.

Salary/Compensation

A driller can be expected to earn between $50,000 to $60,000, on average, per year.
