Mediating Sexual Assault the University of Michigan will allow “alternative resolutions”

The University of Michigan believes to help sexual assault victims by a formal process rather than mediation and other such methods.

Alyssa Peterson, state organizer of Know Your IX, an advocacy group with a name that refers to the federal gender antidiscrimination law, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 said, “In light of MSU's horrible treatment of the Larry Nassar investigation, it's ironic that Michigan is now trying to make it easier for the school to sweep violence under the rug.”

Currently Michigan follows President Trump’s guideline of allowing mediation and “alternative resolution” to deal with sexual assault cases.

Now, the University has increased the time span to investigate into sexual assault matters. A total of 60-75 days will be needed to hear and punish the student that has caused the assault. The time period may be extended for certain circumstances. The change in policy is based on the student feedback and recommendation, especially from survivors.

The changes took place on 7thFebruary. Though, it is yet to be applied to resolve a sexual assault case.
