Why Your Child Needs a Tutor

When your child struggles academically, hiring a tutor is often the right choice to help them succeed. If you have the academic and knowledge and time, you are likely the best tutor for them. However, if you don’t have the background and experience, it is better for you to allow a tutor to handle helping your child through your classes.

• Tutors have the right expertise. Especially when your child is facing exams that can determine which college they can go to or if they are building their foundational literacy skills, it’s important to have a tutor who has the academic knowledge to help them learn. They have the teaching experience required to help your child understand subject matter in a new way that perhaps their teachers have not been able to.
• You can be the cheerleader.  Parents can be the encouragement and emotional support that their children need to succeed in school. You are the one that your child turns to for positivity and love. A tutor cannot provide that, but you can help your child succeed academically by encouraging them in their studies. You have a critical role to play in your child’s success, and by finding resources to help them learn, like a tutor, and encouraging them from the sidelines, you’re doing the best you can to help them succeed.

• New Ways of Learning. Teachers cannot always meet the learning style preferences of each student in their classes. A tutor, however, can help your child by giving them the individual attention they need. When they understand that your child learns best by moving around and doing hands-on activities, for example, they can design your lessons accordingly.
• Personality Connection. When your child finds the right tutor, their personalities will likely mesh well. Your child may not like the particular work that the tutor sets out for them to do, but they should be able to get on decently together. Children learn best from people they can enjoy spending time with, and their teachers may not be the right people for them to learn from.
• Less Pressure. With a tutor, children have lessons in a more neutral location, outside of school. They may not feel the pressure to always do well like they do when they learn in the classroom. Just a simple change of environment can help a child relax and engage more with the material that they are learning.

As you look for a tutor, check their references. Find out what experience they have teaching the particular subject your child needs as well as about their formal educational background in that field. Talk to other parents, and request a trial meeting where you and your child can get to know the tutor. Keep your budget in mind, but also remember that not all the expensive tutors are the best, and not all the cheaper ones are as good as the more expensive ones. Finding the right tutor for you child can mean all the difference in their academic careers.
