Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee was formerly known as the University of Roorkee. This institute for higher education in Engineering and technology was at first formed as College of Civil Engineering in 1847. After seven years, the institute became the Thomason College of Civil Engineering. In 1947, it has become the University of Roorkee after the independence of India.  

This outstanding institute stands up with the motto “Shramam vina n kimapi sadhyam”, in Sanskrit. In English, it means, “Nothing Can Be Achieved Without Hard Work”. This public engineering school, located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, is affiliated to UGC and Mr. Ajit K Chaturvedi is the Officiating chairman and director of this institute.

In short, the institute is known as IIT Roorkee and it has 21 academic departments offering education in engineering, Applied science, Humanities, management and Social Science. The institute also strongly emphasizes on scientific research based technological education.  

According to the QS World University Ranking, the university is ranked 431 among all engineering institutions and it is ranked 93rd in Asia and 51st among all BRICS nations. According to the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the institute has been ranked 501 in 2018 and it is the sixth best engineering institute in India according to NIRF.

Here is a brief description of the institute.

  • At present, the university is offering UG, PG and Doctoral Research program. It has several schools and departments offering tantalizing tutoring experience. In addition, all of the facilities are equipped with first-rated tools and instruments so that the students could get the best out of them and the research scholars could conduct researches with utmost perfection.
  • The campus of IIT Roorkee, is spread over 365 acres. The campus area has all the modern amenities for the students. It contains a vast computer lab. The library of this institution is rich and it contains thousands of books. The library area is of 90,000 sq. ft. and it contains over 3,50,000 documents. The library can accommodate up to 500 readers at any time.  
  • It contains Wi-Fi zone and residence for the students.
  • The university offers an e-portal of information for the students through their websites, so that the students could be up-to-dated with all essential information.  
  • In addition, it also provides transportation for the students. Furthermore, the campus offers cafeteria and canteen as well. It has a medical facility available for the students. For better accommodation of the academic staffs and research scholars, it has separate residential buildings.  
  • The university also holds various seminars and workshops on a regular basis where scholars could publish their papers.
  • In accession to curricular activities, the university also arranges annual cultural and sports events along with intra-departmental ceremonies.
