 Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine grew out of Liaoning Further Education School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1955) and Liaoning Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1956). In 1958, with the approval of The CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee, Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded and recruited its first group of TCM students. In 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the college changed its name into Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2013, with the approval of Liaoning Provincial Government, LNUTCM added the new title of “Liaoning Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine”.

    With over 50 years of development, LNUTCM has formed “One University, Three Campuses”, with a main campus located in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, and two branch campuses respectively in the seaside city—Dalian and renowned Chinese Medicine Capital—Benxi. LNUTCM is the only institution of higher learning in Liaoning Province to train and educate professionals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese Pharmacy, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese Massage, Integration of TCM and Western Medicine in Clinical Practice, Senior Nursing and other medical related disciplines. The university has received many honors successively, such as the National Advanced Grassroots Organization of CCP in the Campaign of Establishing Vanguard and Contending for Excellence, the National Advanced Collective of the Educational System, the National Advanced Collective in Discipline Inspections, Supervision and Audit of the Educational System, the National Civilized Unit, the National May First Labor Award, the Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of Liaoning Province, the Advanced Collective of Liaoning Province, the May First Labor Award of Liaoning Province, Pioneer Workers of Liaoning Province, the Advanced Party Committee of Liaoning Educational System, the Advanced Collective of Liaoning Educational System, the Safe Campus of Liaoning Province and other awards.

    Through adhering to scientific development and enhancing the construction of academic culture, LNUTCM has established its unique educational characteristics, strong in cultivating medical talents for international communication, experimental and clinical innovation, and the succession of traditional Chinese medicine. LNUTCM is the base for National TCM Practitioner Certification Examination and the base for Practical Techniques Test and Examiner Training of National Physician Qualification Exam (the category of TCM). LNUTCM is also the national training base for TCM-Specialized English, the Branch Center of National Databases and Retrieval System of TCM Literature, and the base of International TCM Cooperation. In addition, LNUTCM is the clinical research base for developing key technologies in new TCM medicine authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the national organization for clinical trial of medicine certified by State Food and Drug Administration, the education and examination center of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) in Liaoning Province, and the key institution for Examination and Assessment Preparatory Committee of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). Besides, the university is listed in the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China.

    LNUTCM has six disciplines, namely Medicine, Science, Engineering, Management, Arts and Law, 19 undergraduate programs with an enrollment of over 10,000 students. There are 17 colleges and schools, 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 1 teaching department, 2 experiment & teaching centers, 1 animal lab center, 3 research institutes, 2 libraries and 4 museums in the university. LNUTCM has 1 state-level key discipline, 1 provincial Double First-rate discipline, 3 provincial first-class featured disciplines, 6 provincial disciplines in the project of “Constructing Characteristic Disciplines for Upgrading the Competitiveness of the Institutions of Higher Education”, 7 provincial key disciplines, 26 state-level key TCM disciplines approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 21 provincial key TCM disciplines, 3 post-doctoral research centers, 3 first-class disciplines authorized to grant doctorate degrees, 16 second-class disciplines authorized to grant doctorate degrees, 3 first-class disciplines authorized to grant master’s degrees, 19 second-class disciplines authorized to grant master’s degrees, 1 discipline authorized to grant professional doctorate degrees, and 4 disciplines authorized to grant professional master’s degrees.

    LNUTCM has 1 state-level teaching team, 4 state-level featured programs, 1 state-level comprehensive reform pilot project, 1 state-level experimental zone for innovating talent cultivation, 2 pilot projects of Excellent Doctors (TCM) Training Program authorized by the Ministry of Education and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 state-level university students’ extracurricular education base, 3 state-level excellent courses, 3 state-level established projects for excellent sharing courses, 4 state-level awards for teaching achievements, 6 provincial model centers for experimental teaching, 2 provincial virtual simulation centers for experimental teaching, 7 provincial teaching teams, 22 provincial excellent courses, 6 provincial excellent sharing courses, 1 provincial excellent open video course for undergraduates, 2 provincial projects of quality assurance systems and network platform construction for the institutions of higher education, 5 provincial projects for extra-curriculum practice for university students, 1 provincial innovation practice base for university students, 4 provincial programs for experimenting reforms in the institutions of higher education, 32 provincial awards for teaching achievements. LNUTCM is also the chief-editor institution for 68 national planned textbooks, 14 planned textbooks for “The Thirteenth Five-year Plan” of TCM industry, 8 provincial classic textbooks, and 8 provincial planned textbooks for “The Twelfth Five-year Plan” of Liaoning Province.

    LNUTCM has 1 member of Discipline Review Group of State Department, 1 “973 Plan” chief scientist, 3 candidates in the national project of “Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents”, 58 experts who receive special national government allowances, 4 middle-aged and young experts awarded by Ministry of Public Health for their outstanding contributions, 2 national TCM masters, 1 national famous expert of TCM, 31 national veteran TCM experts as mentors training talents for the succession of TCM expertise, 1 national outstanding teacher, 2 national outstanding TCM teachers, 1 winner of “Qihuang Inheritance and Development of Chinese Medicine” prize, 1 candidate of Academician of Liaoning province, 2 provincial leading talents, 2 provincial climbing scholars, 9 provincial distinguished professors, 9 provincial excellent experts, 34 in the Hundred class and 39 in the Thousand class of the provincial project of “Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents”, 8 provincial TCM masters, 75 provincial known TCM doctors and 14 provincial outstanding teachers.

    LNUTCM has 1 national and provincial joint engineering lab, 1 key lab sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 1 state-level TCM clinical research base, 3 state-level clinical pharmacology bases, 3 key research centers appointed by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 11 Grade III research labs appointed by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 national popular science base, 1 provincial humanity and social science research base, 29 provincial key labs and engineering centers. During the period of “The Twelfth Five-year Plan”, LNUTCM has undertaken 791 research projects, including 97 state-level projects and 350 provincial projects; published 7752 academic papers and 419 academic books. The university also hosts three academic journals of TCM.Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Archives of Traditional Chinese Medicine are two Chinese core periodicals and Chinese core science and technology periodicals, and Journal of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is Chinese core science and technology periodical.

    LNUTCM is also one of the Chinese universities which are first authorized to recruit international students as well as students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The university is eligible to take international students with scholarship awarded by the Chinese government as well as PHD scholarship awarded by Liaoning province. Based in Asia, aiming for Europe and the United States, exploring Africa, looking around the world, LNUTCM has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, successively establishing cooperation with universities, medical institutions and academic organizations in 35 countries and regions such as South Korea, Singapore, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Slovakia, etc. and signed about 80 cooperation agreements. The university has been engaged in various forms of international academic, medical and educational cooperation, and hosted international conferences and meetings many times. In September 2016, the Confucius Classroom of TCM cooperated by LNUTCM and Slovakia Medical University was officially inaugurated.

    The four affiliated hospitals of LNUTCM are respectively named Liaoning Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Liaoning Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute, Liaoning Coloproctological Hospital and Liaoning Integrated TCM and Western Medicine Hospital. There are altogether 11 key clinical specialties appointed by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 20 key clinical specialties appointed by the Ministry of Public Health and 34 provincial key clinical specialties. LNUTCM also has 6 indirectly affiliated hospitals and 57 bases for clinical teaching and practicing.

    To enrich the connotation of healthy campus, LNUTCM has been dedicated to the construction of the humanities campus, conservation-oriented campus, safe campus and smart campus. The university has specified the norms, standards and processes for service system; built a “three-in-one” system for prevention and control of security problems; covered Shenyang campus and Dalian campus with advanced and high-performance network infrastructure; possessed an efficient and secure data center based on cloud computing; and constructed a high-level information resources management system with network and mobile access to literature, information and consultation.

    Adhering to the socialist orientation, LNUTCM has never stopped its effort of reaching its best with the motto of “Virtue and Knowledge, Inheritance and Innovation” and the principle of “Striving for the best rather than the largest”. Directed by innovation and towards serving Liaoning Province, through comprehensively enhancing its own construction of academic culture, LNUTCM has made immense contributions in revitalizing the traditional Liaoning industrial base and the cause of inheriting and developing traditional Chinese medicine. LNUTCM has been steadily stepping with great strides towards a domestically first-class and internationally renowned teaching-and-research TCM university.
