Literacy & English language Arts
Grades K-3    (135 minutes of literacy instruction per day)
Balanced Literacy utilizing elements of the workshop model and the
Lucy Caukins Reading & Writing Curriculum:

• Phonemic Awareness Development

• Word Work & Vocabulary Development
• Guided Reading Rotations (Reading Fluency & Comprehension)
• Read Alouds
• Shared Reading
• Collaborative text-based discussions (Speaking & Listening)

Grades 3-5        (120 minutes of core literary instruction)

*Grades 4-5 are departmentalized. Students at each grade level     receive literacy instruction from a certified literacy instructor.

Writing

Lucy Caukins Reading & Writing Curriculum
In grades K-8, an additional 30-45 minutes 3-4 days per week is designated exclusively for writing development.

Mathematics
Grades K-5  Pearson Envision Curriculum
Grades 6-8  Connected Math Project (CMP)

Holden’s Middle School Mathematics Program is a comprehensive, problem-based, student-centered curriculum of study, providing students a venue to express their ideas as they work through challenging, rigorous problems that develops both mathematical skills and ways of thinking.  Students’ thinking, habits of mind, matures as students develop the ways they approach and solve mathematical challenges.

Science

All Holden teachers of science grades K-8 are progressively integrating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and in conjunction with Common Core literacy standards. Teachers in grades K-5 rely on FOSS kits and other supplemental resources that align to the new NGSS standards.
