Sharp drop in international student visas worries some US colleges

Data collected by the State Department shows a sharp 17% decline in the F-1 visas granted to foreign students to attend academic institutions in the U.S. The blame goes to Trump’s administration and its stance on immigrants.

Laws passed regarding immigrants by the Trump government seem like bad news for many schools as the number of international enrollment has started to decrease. This has also brought a decline in the revenue being generated by these institutions.

In 2015, more than 600,000 F-1visas were given out. However, in 2017the number has gone down to 393,573. It is still unclear as to how many applications came in and how many were rejected.

Most of the visa that was declined was from students in Asian countries, mostly from China and India. The reason behind the decline is due to some factors. The first factor is the political rhetoric on the new immigration laws. Another factor is the changes in the Chinese visa policy allowing Chinese students are to obtain a visa for five years rather than one. Similarly, many other factors also contribute to this great decline in F-1 visas being granted and to the H-1B foreign work visa.
