New York legislators demand mandatory Black History education

In recent times there have been many cases where teachers are being banned from teaching Black-History Lessons. Last week, a New York City Principal was investigated when many students and staff at a Bronx school complained that the principal banned teachers from teaching Black-History lessons and Black teachers and students were targeted and abused.

A similar case took place in an Intermediate School in New York. The principal, Patricia Catania has been accused of not allowing lessons on Black History. Even though the school consist of 95% Black and Hispanic students. The investigation is on-going and in the meantime, the Brooklyn legislation has demanded schools to make Black History lesson mandatory.

State senator, Jesse Hamilton and Assemblywomen, Diana Richardson, are trying to get the legislation on the governor’s desk.  Hamilton said, “We will not allow Black history to be erased, to be denigrated, or to be put to the sidelines by ignorance.”

The case of Catania is just one of the many examples of an anti-Black culture trying to be set in. A student, Malcolm Xavier Combs, at Queens was banned from printing his first and middle name on his senior year sweatshirt as it would be read as – Malcolm X.
