Despite legalization, California colleges stick to their marijuana bans

California colleges resume the ban on marijuana, despite it being allowed legally by the law enforcement authorities. California has legalized marijuana for people over the age of twenty-one, and it can now be bought and sold at pharmacies. But the colleges maintain the ban on its usage and consumption. Therefore students cannot be seen with a pot or appear under its influence when in the college. In case they are found to be using or carrying it, serious disciplinary action would be taken against them.

The reason why colleges have not adhered to this law is that of the funding they receive. According to the law, colleges that receive research funds, which most of them do, must keep their policies aligned with the federal drug laws, according to which, marijuana is still prohibited.

The colleges are reminding this particular law to the students through new student orientations, or through the mail and even through the different social media platforms.
Ron Levine, chief of a local community college police department said "Because we accept federal grants we have to follow federal law, so marijuana will still be contraband on campus. We will get the word out as much as we can. It is not a free-for-all.”
