Trump’s International Policies Could Have Lasting Effects on Higher Education

The policies and changes brought by Trumps administration regarding refugees and immigrants have made overseas students think twice before applying to American universities.

The recent event of the racially charged shooting in Kanas has forced a lot of Indians to not send their children to study in the US.

However, it is too soon to say if the number of applicants will decline, but the fear of uncertainty remains on whether Trump's policies will decrease the percentage of overseas students coming to US to study.

The Federal court has blocked the travel ban that Trump put in place. However, there is a word that a revised version will be released. The ban is blocked to promote academic diversity and freedom, but most importantly it's about them protecting their budgets. Most higher education in America is funded from the tuition of these overseas students who pay more than their full fare.

American colleges and universities host around 1 million overseas students of which 160,000 are from India and 300,000 from China.

An interview was conducted with Esther Brimmer, executive director of NAFSA, Association of International Educators which is a nonprofit dedicated to international education and exchange, for more on the issue. The interview is available on the National Public Radio, Inc. US page.
