Intro

Centre of Excellence Award Winner, Tir na nÓg, is a day care centre where children from Athy and the wider community receive quality care in a child centred environment. It aims to:-

  • focus on the total development of the child in partnership with the family
  • act as an advocate for quality childcare practices in Athy and the wider community

About Us

Tir na nOg is a Centre of Excellence Award winners 2003-2004, 2005-2007 and 2008- 2010, in conjunction with practising Equal Opportunities which led to Montessori Classes being visited under the “Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme 2001 – 2006” and meeting the criteria for “Certification as a Montessori Environment for 3 – 6 year olds” and Certified Montessori Environment 2005 - 2007.

The Montessori method allows children to reach their individual potential through the prepared environment which is a child centred location that allows intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual freedom.

The Montessori materials are precise, activities provoking learning aids designed to isolate a specific quality. The child learns with ease in a relaxed and orderly environment.

The youngest age we can cater for is 15 months or slightly younger depending on our age group in the room.

In this room your child has the opportunity to experiment with paint, water, sand, playdough and other “fun” activities allowing creativity and expression to germinate. The routine will just be a little structured, but will allow for rest periods when needed.

In our Naíonra a group of children of between 3-5 years of age come together under the guidance of a stiúrthóir or leader to play and learn through Irish. The Naíonra has two main objectives:

To help the children to develop in every way

To help the children to acquire Irish or to improve his/her knowledge of Irish by using it as the means of communication.

Tir na nOg ,along with their Naíonra programme, also offer an Irish Afterschool Club. Children can be dropped off at opening time and we will give them breakfast if required and then take the children to the local schools.

In the After-school Club children will have the opportunity to complete their written homework. On completion of their homework children are free to take part in arts and crafts, games and other group activities organised by the staff.

Children are encouraged to participate in group work but are also free to choose their own activities from the wide variety available.
