Philosophy and objectives

The holistic and self directed education of children in a safe, nurturing and prepared environment.

At Fairy Godmother Preschool we aim to enable all children to become confident and competent learners. Children will develop the Physical, Emotional, Intellectual and Social skills required to enable them for lifelong learning and life’s challenges e.g. going to school, building relationships etc.

Each child is an individual and will learn at their own pace.

Montessori supports spontaneous learning. This means that the child is involved in exploring and in finding answers to their questions.

Typical Pre-school Activities

Free Play: During this time children have the opportunity to work out what happens around them through play. This often happens during role play. Children will choose from all materials and toys in the classroom what they would like to do. It gives them the opportunity to play alone or as part of a group. This promotes their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Circle Time: Circle time provides the children with the opportunity to interact with each other as a group. During this time we will learn calendar skills, weather skills, sing songs, play games, read stories, recap about the day and learn about each other.

Movement and Multisensory Activities: this helps children learn about their bodies. Children’s gross motor and fine motor skills will be developed in this time. Children will also learn to focus and follow directions. This may be indoors or outdoors.

Construction Activities: this develops children’s creativity, motor skills and hand/eye coordination. Children will learn to create different things. This can help to teach children about patterns. Children often make their own props for imaginative play during this time.

Messy Play: these are sensory experiences. Children will work hands on with a variety of materials. This will stimulate their senses.

Art and Crafts: Art and crafts stimulate a Childs mind to be creative. These activities also assist in the development of fine and gross motor skills. Children also achieve a sense of pride and accomplishment through the development of projects. Our programme is filled with hands on learning activities as well as open ended art activities. This allows the child to explore the use of various materials and processes and enjoy what happens. Uneven and lopsided projects can be expected from children at this age. The children are in the process of learning. It is the process not product that is important. Please keep this in mind and treat all of your children‘s work as masterpieces.

Montessori Activities: Children will learn about language, mathematics, science and geography during this time. Children will also explore and learn practical life skills and sensory skills. Montessori uses natural materials which were created to support and foster children‘s learning.
