Virginia Tech makes list of safest college campuses in America

According to a report published by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, Virginia Tech (VT) has been declared one of the safest campuses in United States of America.

VT has been ranked the 8th safest campus in America. The campus only reported 10 violent crime cases and 175 property crimes on campus.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security said that the ranking was based on the recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Survey that was posted by the U.S, Department of Education. The report was published on their official website Alarms.org.

“Nearly all accredited institutions were considered in this project, save for those with enrollment under 10,000 students, and others for which a significant amount of data was unavailable,” posted the National Council for Home Safety and Security. “We determined that 10,000 enrolled students was an appropriate threshold for this ranking. No remote campuses under the same University were aggregated and each enrollment number pertains to that specific campus.”

Other universities that were ranked as the top 10 safest university campuses includes, Brigham Young University, Oakland University, Northern Kentucky University, University of Rhode Island, Bridgewater State University, University of New Hampshire, Boston College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT), University of Massachusetts and Tufts University.

The safety for each university was calculated based on the number of crimes that were reported by each university. All the crimes were then analyzed to see how many cases of rape, robbery, assault, burglaries, motor vehicle theft and arsons were reported. Other factors were also taken into account to calculate the safety score. These include cases of violence, property crime rate for the respective cities in which the schools are located.

The method used to calculate the campus safety scores, as reported by the National Council for Home Safety and Security was defined as, “A campus safety score was calculated by adding together the rates of both types of crimes per 1,000 students (violent crime was weighted 150% higher than property crime to account for the severity of the crime).”
